LAMENTATIONS 3:21: Mourning by Morning

TITLE: MOURNING BY MORNING – Hope in the midst of despair! [If my memory serves me correctly this message was adapted from the message of another]
TEXT: Lamentations 3:21

“This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope.”

[SUICIDE] An Illinois man is in prison for life for intimidating his wife to suicide … making him what's believed to be the first person convicted under a law which says it's a felony to induce anyone to take their own life.

But how sad is it that the woman’s despair was so great.

Jesus tells us to come unto Him if we are weary and heavy laden. For those of us who've "been there, done that," the hope we have in our Lord is powerful beyond belief.

Though times and circumstances assault us, the Lord's solid foundation withstands the mightiest of storms.

How sad that generation after generation, in some families, pass on this hopelessness as their legacy. Truly the sins of the parents are visited to the kids to the third and fourth generations.

INQUIRY: Why did Jeremiah have a change of heart?

1. Because (v.19) when he remembered his affliction, his wanderings, his wormwood and bitterness, he then
2. Remembered God’s never-ceasing lovingkindnesses, His never-diminishing compassions, and His never-failing faithfulness. (vv.22-23)

CONTEXT: Psalm 56:8 says God keeps our tears in a bottle … and listed in a book….

Swindoll believes, [God must have] "several jugs marked 'Jeremiah.'"

Jeremiah from late 7th century to early 6th century BC … for about forty years … never had anything but heartache.

His message was of God’s coming judgment. The reason he is known as the weeping prophet is because he saw and understood the depth of his people’s rebellion and lack of concern.

TRUTH CLAIM: Our memories are frequently bond slaves of insecurity … tortured and manipulated by every demon of despair and monster of misery.

Desperate minds call to remembrance every dark apprehension of the past, they exaggerate every gloomy feature of the present; thus memory, now draped with sackcloth, projects upon the mind a future of mingled bitterness and affliction.

There is, however, no necessity for this. Wisdom can and will transform our recollections into angels of comfort … messengers of light … if we determine them to be so.

These same remembrances which in their left-hand bring so many dark omens, can be trained to convey in their right a wealth of hope-filled God-ordained favors.

Wisdom can discipline our memories to disdain a crown of rusting iron, for one of gold … glittering with gemstones.

Thus it was in Jeremiah’s experience; in the previous verse recollection brought him to deep mortification of soul:

“My soul has them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me” [KJV]
“Surely my soul remembers, And is bowed down within me” [NASB]

And this same memory restored him to life and comfort.

“This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.”

Like a double-edged sword, his memory killed conceit with one edge, then destroyed despair with the other. [e.g. Hebrews 4:12]

INQUIRY: How may we overcome depression and despair when assaulted by negative remembrances?
EXPANDED OUTLINE
I. BY REMEMBERING GOD'S NEVER-CEASING LOVINGKINDNESS!

“Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Romans 5:1-5

II. BY REMEMBERING GOD'S NEVER-DIMINISHING COMPASSIONS!

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”

Romans 5:8, 9

“For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one also hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait expectantly for it.”

Romans 8:24, 25

III. BY REMEMBERING GOD'S NEVER-FAILING FAITHFULNESS!

“Morning by morning, O LORD,
You will hear my voice;
morning by morning
I lay my request before You
and wait in expectation.”
Psalms 5:3

APPLICATION: As a general principle, if we would but discipline our memories more shrewdly, we might, in the darkest of our despairs, light a match which would instantly kindle the lamp of comfort.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Hebrews 11:1

God doesn’t need to create a new thing upon this earth just to restore believers to joy; if we would rake the ashes of our past with devotion, we would certainly find light for our present; and if we would open the book of eternal truth and turn to God’s throne of grace, our small lights would soon shine brightly for our future, as intended.

CHALLENGE: When we fail to understand the nature and promises of our God we set ourselves up for disappointment, discouragement, depression, despondency, despair, etc.

Remember the never-ceasing lovingkindnesses of the Lord; recite his deeds of grace. Open the divine volume of recollection which so richly illuminates His never-failing mercies, and be joy-filled.

“Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, Unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High That both good and ill go forth? Why should any living mortal, or any man, Offer complaint in view of his sins? Let us examine and probe our ways, And let us return to the LORD.”

Lamentations 3:37-40

On that account, memory can be the wellspring of joy.

Let the Comforter bend your memory to His service; let it be the commander of multitudes of encouragements.

HEBREWS 3:12-13 - Son of Encouragement!

TITLE: SON OF ENCOURAGEMENT – How to be a biblical encourager!

“Take care … there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart which falls away from the living God. But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What is the profile of an authentic biblical encourager?
CONCISE OUTLINE:

I. AN ENCOURAGER IS FIRST A BIBLICAL CHRISTIAN
II. AN ENCOURAGER IS CHRIST-LIKE
III. AN ENCOURAGER HAS AN OBEDIENT SPIRIT

TRUTH/CONTEXT: I was reminded this week by one of my daughters of the importance of encouragement as a ministry in our relationships.

A couple of weeks ago I preached on koinonia – fellowship! We can’t actually have authentic fellowship without encouragement ... you see they’re both rooted in love and if the church is rooted in anything it is rooted in love, agape love – for God is love!

How should I encourage others? What is the practical side of encouragement?

A Scottish blogger friend, John Brown at Scotwise, who lives on the Gold Coast of Australia, just finished a 3-part series on the subject. I’ve borrowed from some of his material.

When you encourage someone, is it limited to just words? Or do you get up close and personal, where you can see the whites of their eyes?

Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you. -

It is wonderful when you run into an encourager … often they don’t know they are because it’s so natural to them. Many who are convinced they have no ministry have the ministry of encouragement.

My friend shares this story ...

[PLAY ME A SONG] An elderly widow, restricted in her activities, was eager to serve Christ. After praying about this, she realized she could bring blessing to others by playing the piano. The next day she placed this small ad in the Oakland Tribune: "Pianist will play hymns by phone daily for those who are sick and despondent – the service is free." When people called, she would ask, "What hymn would you like to hear?"

Within a few months her playing had brought cheer to several hundred people. Many of them freely poured out their hearts to her, and she was able to help and encourage them.

Your image of a biblical Christian might be of one who speaks positive words of encouragement to you, one who says nice things, communicates with honey-like words. But you’d be wrong.

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What is the profile of an authentic biblical encourager?
EXPANDED OUTLINE:

I. AN ENCOURAGER IS FIRST A BIBLICAL CHRISTIAN –

A. Being a Biblical Christian of course means he is born again

Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."

John 3:3

B. Being a Biblical Christian means the bible is his operations manual, his daily guide ...

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

II. AN ENCOURAGER IS CHRIST-LIKE –

A. He is an imitator of Jesus (Christian means, lil' Christ)
B. He has compassion on the multitudes [Matthew 9:36]
C. He cares for the least of these [Matthew 25:31-46]

III. AN ENCOURAGER HAS AN OBEDIENT SPIRIT –

A. He loves the Lord his God with all that he is [Matt 22:35-38; the Great Commandment]
B. He loves his neighbor [Second Commandment]
C. He seeks first the Kingdom of God [Matthew 6:33]
D. He denies himself [Matthew 16:24]
E. He serves others not self [Philippians 2:3-4]
F. He reaches out to others [Matthew 20:28; Jesus did not come to be served]
G. His focus is on things above and not things of this world [Colossians 3:1-3]
H. He takes one day at a time [Matthew 6:34; Christy Lane’s song]
I. He makes disciples and teaches God’s commandments [Matthew 28:19-20]
J. He is a John 15 disciple …

1. He knows "apart" from Jesus he "can do nothing" [John 15:5a]
2. He glorifies the Father by bearing much fruit [John 15:8]
3. He loves the brethren [John 15:12]

IV. AN ENCOURAGER THRIVES ON HIS LABOR'S FRUIT –

A. He is not one who is satisfied with a moment's elation (e.g., Ananias and Sapphira)
B. He incites and exhorts others to act (Stephen)
C. His reward is a changed life (Paul at the Areopagus)

APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: The greatest encourager is the Holy Spirit; the Father had the Son tells us He sent Him to help and comfort us, lit. to encourage us.

He is referred to as the paracletos! One who comes along side of to console and to counsel, to edify and exhort!

[FLOTATION] During the Second World War a plane went down and the crew was for some reason unable to get their “Mae Wests” on and found themselves in the middle of the ocean with nothing to help them stay afloat … except a box of paper cups. Somehow they arranged the cups in such a ways that they served as a flotation device until they were rescued.

Encouragement is like those paper cups, it helps keep us all afloat until we are rescued.

My friend John says …

The ministry of encouragement does not involve great personal gifts of speech, or musical talent. Encouragement can be done by anyone, who will simply try to see those around them through the eyes of Christ, and there is a great need for people who will lift up rather than put down. It is a gift that we all must cultivate, or many who are downtrodden, will be ground into the dust.

He says ….

It costs us nothing to encourage people, it is a free gift from our encouraging God, let us use it freely to glorify his name, and to extend the Kingdom of Heaven!

But to be a biblical encourager one must be like the cups and not just like the “play me a hymn woman,” we must get in the water with the discouraged and put ourselves at risk with them.

[HALLMARK CARDS] has a great series of commercials on encouragement … the trou-bled teen whose principle encouraged her and the little boy who stayed in from his recesses in order to befriend a crippled boy … but they are only biblical if they cost you something.

I think of the 22 year old clerk at the florist who included a card of cheer to a customer’s friend’s 15 year old son who had just found out he had leukemia … she didn’t have to do it, but she’d survived the disease herself and wanted to encourage him … it changed his life!

The bottom line is this: and encourager exhorts, entreats, incites, uplifts, consoles, comforts, coun-sels, stimulates, edifies, excites courage, inspires, builds confidence & hope, motivates, and em-boldens among many things.

Notice an encourager is not a discourager, or a discomforter, a conspirator, a destroyer, a demotivator, or a robber of hope.

It used to be any youngster in Sunday School was better by far in Scripture than any unchurched counterpart. Not only is that no longer true, but now grownup Christians run and hide when Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormon missionaries arrive at their door. Why?

Webster’s defines ignorance as "the lack of knowledge." That's why!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What must we know about a biblical passage in order to profit from it?

APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: Bible study isn’t a duty or an obligation for the child of God; but it's not an option either.

The old saying is true: if you love the Author, then you'll love His book.

At no time in the history of the world has it been easier to know His story than it is now. And yet, at no time in the history of the world have so many, who have been blessed with so much, known so little about the Giver of all blessings.

Sadly, this is true in almost every church in America today!

Think long and hard about why you (yes, you!) lack the necessary knowledge to defend your faith.

Ask yourself, "What is so important in my life it keeps me from the study of God's word?" Whatever your excuse is, ask yourself this, "Will it (whatever it is) stand judgment over me on that day, or will God?"

APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: 1 Corinthians 11:26 says "as often as" we partake of His supper we "proclaim the Lord's death until He comes." This we may all do, freely!

Yet only those who can declare in truth they’ve been "crucified with Christ" will have power in the proclamation of their testimony!

I perceive there are many who desire to proclaim Him "crucified," yet have no power, because they themselves have not been crucified with Him!

How the Lord must grieve as He sees us partake of His supper with such a deficiency in our lives.

If we freely choose to preach the Lord's agony (in this symbolic way), then we are obligated to practice what we preach!

It's not just those who are called to the preaching ministry who are obligated to preach that Christ died for our sins, but all those who go by the name of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-19)!

And, if we preach the Lord's agony, in this memorial way, professing to be followers of His, then we must manifest that same spirit of sacrifice which brought Him to the cross of His agony!

For it's in that spirit of sacrifice the world sees the truth and reality of what Jesus did for them!

The Hebrews were as familiar with the duties of the High Priest as modern Americans are with the duties of the President of the United States.

Their daily lives were permeated with priests, altars, and sacrifices; the writer of this epistle reminds them God has provided them a perfect High Priest and a Perfect Sacrifice for the heavenly temple ... the Lamb of God.

The Hebrews had the shadow of the good things to come ... we have found the reality and that reality is in Jesus ... we have found the evidence of His atoning work written in blood on the altar of God's Word.

God would encourage us to persevere in the face of obstacles. We have a forerunner who is our hope, and anchor of our soul, both sure and steadfast.

12:25

TITLE: EVERY MAN A MOSES: Called To Bring God’s People Out!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How is the call to Moses similar to the Great Commission's call to the saint of today?

I. In that both call us to God!
II. In that both send us out from God!
III. In both we bring the enslaved to God!

APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: The world, like Israel, is in bondage. Each of us has been called to come to God, that He might send us out, that we might bring them out.

Every non-believer in the world today has his own Egypt, his own Pharaoh, and his own savior … what they lack is a Moses. For centuries priests stood between man and their God, now our apathy does!

TOPIC: Leadership; Organization, Planning

TITLE: REPRESENTATIVE AND REPRESENTED - How and why God wants us organized!
TEXT: EXODUS 18:18

“Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself."

TRUTH CLAIM: If left untaught and undiscussed, the people will let their leaders do all the work on their own.

Everywhere in Scripture we see the Lord encouraging and endorsing organization. Not to elevate one individual over another, but rather to show His people how to work together with one mind toward one goal, to show the leaders how they ought to organize the people for the work!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What three questions help us understand God's organizational plan?
CONCISE OUTLINE:

I. HOW HE WANTS US ORGANIZED?
II. WHY HE WANTS US ORGANIZED?
III. WHAT HE EXPECTS OF THE ORGANIZATION?

APPLICATION: Moses was so close to the trees, he couldn't see the forest; it took someone from outside to present better way to him. To Moses' credit he saw clearly the wisdom of his father-in-law's suggestion.

God has only one way to organize, yet he allows many variations of His way. It's not so important who has what method, rather it's whether we

1. operate within the context of God's way
2. work toward God's goal, and
3. cooperate with one another to accomplish it

Our church has no exemption from God's plan; if we expect to be a part of achieving His objective, we must organize and cooperate His way!

CHALLENGE: We must challenge ourselves to remember it is not our work or our goal, but God's work and God's goal. If He prefers one way over another, we must organize His way and cooperate in His work!

Look around the church today and try to understand that we are following a biblical model. Try to learn how it operates, then find a way to get involved ... with a cooperative attitude.

TOPIC: Priesthood; Types (OT)

TITLE: A SPECIAL TREASURE - A Kingdom of Priests and a Holy Nation!
TRUTH: The words of our title equally apply to the Church in 1 Peter 2:9. So the promises given to Israel are also given to the Church, "if [we] will indeed obey [His] voice and keep [His] covenant" [v.5].

It would do us well to make note of the similarities and differences between the Mosaic Covenant and the New Covenant in Christ's blood.

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How does Israel before God at Mt. Sinai compare to the Church before God today?
CONCISE OUTLINE

I. WE BOTH -

A. MUST COME BEFORE HIM!
B. MUST BE PREPARED TO COME!
C. CAN EXPECT TO HEAR HIS VOICE!
D. MUST OBEY HIS VOICE!
E. MUST KEEP HIS COVENANT!

II. BUT THE CHURCH -

A. NEEDS NO HUMAN INTERCESSOR!
B. HAS ONLY ONE LAW - THE ROYAL LAW!
C. MAY COME BOLDLY INTO HIS PRESENCE!

APPLICATION: O what joy floods my soul; O what freedom I enjoy! The Lord, while I was yet a sinner, died for me! I'm not just free, but free indeed!

In other words, it's impossible to keep the law: "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all." [James 2:10]

In fact, it was never God's intent that the law be kept: "The law was our tuto, to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." [Galatians 3:24]

It was always God's plan to redeem the world through His Son: "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, 'Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" [John 1:29]

CHALLENGE: There are five or six covenants in the Old Testament. The believer, who truly appreciates what the Lord has done, will endeavor to understand the purpose of these covenants relative to the New Covenant in Christ's blood. The reason?

Most of what we know as New Testament light has reflected off those covenants. You'll be surprised when your eyes are opened to this truth.
