WONDERFUL WORKS OF GOD: First Fruits!
TITLE – WITNESSES TO JERUSALEM #2: Wonderful Works of God – First Fruits!
TEXT: Acts 2:22-24 (14-47)
"Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know – this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.”
1. The Preeminence of the Living Lord!We want to take special notice of this context as we progress through the book.
2. The Prominence of the Holy Spirit!
3. The Power of the Authentic Church!
INQUIRY: What is the gist of Peter’s powerful proclamation?
CONCISE OUTLINE
I. CHRIST WAS HELD UP BY GOD – God gave all who could rea-son adequate confirmation of the identity of His anointed! [22]TRUTH/CONTEXT:
II. CHRIST WAS DELIVERED UP BY GOD – God had a plan for and a foreknowledge of the deliverance of His anointed to His enemies! [23]
III. CHRIST WAS RAISED UP BY GOD – God ended the power of death over man by raising His anointed from the dead! [24]
I can see the people sitting in the Upper Room … an early Starbucks for disciples … sipping on their lattes and nibbling on their chocolate coated cinnamon swizzle sticks.Today we’re going to focus on Peter’s powerful sermon to the “men of Israel” [22] and its impact.
Something totally unexpected happened to awaken them from their funk. The women were the first to notice; they were busy rushing around making sure the men were comfortable and the kids were quiet. They heard it more than saw it. Mary made an audible “oh” when she saw the glow build in the upper corner of the room; then whoosh, wham, whap!
The Spirit of God was on them like chigger on a hot summer day! It was over before it began … they all staggered and stumbled out the door, then down the stairs. Out into the City Square the wobbled like drunken sailors … some sprawling on the grass as their knees gave out. A cop was called to arrest “a bunch of drunken Galileans.”
Quickly James and Peter gathered the group together and laying hands on each of them, calling upon each of them “to speak in unknown tongues.” [tongue in cheek!]
The book was written by Luke, the author of the gospel accredited to his name. We must understand that it is recorded history. A continuation of the gospel account.
- 1:3-5] First, Jesus had told the disciples and apostles to wait in Jerusalem for the power promised by the Father … the Holy Spirit.
- [7,8] Then, once there, Jesus reiterates the GREAT COMMISSION.
- [9-11] Christ ascends; disciples return to Upper Room (Jerusalem), where they chose an apostolic replacement for Judas [12-26].
INQUIRY: What is the gist of Peter’s great message?
- [2:1-3] Finally, the true Church is formed, having already been founded in its Head … Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit arrives with flourish and power; on the Day of Pentecost.
- [4-13] Under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit the 120 or so individuals in the Upper Room move into the streets to witness to the works of God [11].
- [14-36] Peter then gives his first recorded sermon … an apologetic [simultaneously proclaiming and defending the cause of Christ].
EXPANDED OUTLINE
I. CHRIST WAS HELD UP BY GOD – [22]APPLICATION: This now answers the question of how the Jews were to know the anointed of God, whom they longed to receive but rejected [John 1:11]A. God gave all who could reason adequate confirmation of the identity of His anointed!II. CHRIST WAS DELIVERED UP BY GOD – [23]
B. With miracles, wonders, signs.
C. ResurrectionA. God had a plan for and a foreknowledge of the deliverance of His anointed to His enemies!III. CHRIST WAS RAISED UP BY GOD – [24]
B. He foreknew!
C. In fact He planned it!A. God ended the power of death over man by raising His anointed from the dead!
B. Death was in labor, about to deliver all of mankind into the hands of the devil.
C. The death of the Son of God and His resurrection from the dead killed its power over man.
D. Christ, the First Fruits … death now saw it was impossible to hold Him in his grip.
E. In fact, for any in Christ [Romans 6:3-11 READ IT!]
Truly God did more to reveal His anointed than could ever be reasonably demanded of Him.
Peter’s message was for the Jew only [14, 22, 29, & 37]; what happened when they heard his message?
- THEY HAD A GREAT CONVICTION … “they were pierced to the heart.” [37a]
- THEY ASKED A GREAT QUESTION … “Brethren, what shall we do?” [37b]
- PETER GAVE A GREAT RESPONSE … “repent” and “receive”! [38,39]
- GOD RECEIVED A GREAT REWARD … “there were added that day about three thousand souls” [41; cp. 47b]
Our response to his message doesn’t have to be identical to Israel’s response but it must at least imitate or mimic it!
How did they respond? They devoted themselves steadfastly to …
We are not to duplicate by cookie cutter this early experience … but God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow … His desire for them is His desire for us.
- teaching/study [42]
- fellowship/held things in common/community
- breaking of bread/unity
- prayers
- felt awe (fear of the Lord) [43]
- single-minded [46]
- went to temple
- visited one another’s home
- glad sincere hearts
- praising God [47]
- soul-winning/increasing in number [41,47b]
Have you not seen the wonderful works of God? Have you not the same evidence provided to you which was provided to them? Have you not the same God and the same anointed of God?
To paraphrase v. 36 –
“Therefore let all the church know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Messiah … this Jesus who was crucified for you while you were yet a sinner.”
Lord/Master/Ruler for you to serve.

TOPIC: Knowledge; Bible, Discipleship, Scripture, Word
TITLE: ROOTS OF THE TREE OF LIFE – Hidden Treasure in Biblical Trivia!
TRUTH CLAIM: It's becoming the single greatest embarrassment to the Body of Christ in the last 20 centuries! What is it? It's the horrible lack of biblical knowledge on the part of the saints of God!
It used to be any youngster in Sunday School was better by far in Scripture than any unchurched counterpart. Not only is that no longer true, but now grownup Christians run and hide when Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormon missionaries arrive at their door. Why?
Webster’s defines ignorance as "the lack of knowledge." That's why!
FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What must we know about a biblical passage in order to profit from it?I. WE MUST UNDERSTAND THE POSITION OF THE PASSAGE!THEN, AND ONLY THEN, WILL WE DISCOVER -
II. THE PURPOSE OF THE PASSAGE!III. THE PROFIT OF THE PASSAGE!APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: Bible study isn’t a duty or an obligation for the child of God; but it's not an option either.
The old saying is true: if you love the Author, then you'll love His book.
At no time in the history of the world has it been easier to know His story than it is now. And yet, at no time in the history of the world have so many, who have been blessed with so much, known so little about the Giver of all blessings.
Sadly, this is true in almost every church in America today!
Think long and hard about why you (yes, you!) lack the necessary knowledge to defend your faith.
Ask yourself, "What is so important in my life it keeps me from the study of God's word?" Whatever your excuse is, ask yourself this, "Will it (whatever it is) stand judgment over me on that day, or will God?"

TITLE: Fulfilling All Righteousness!
FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How is "all righteousness" fulfilled?I. By Being Obedient to the Father's Plan!
II. By Demonstrating Agreement with His Plan!
III. By Separating the Vertical from the Horizontal!
Matthew 6:18
... upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.Only the True Church will be built, only perfect materials will be used; no natural or supernatural disasters will be able to shake it or break it, and the title is clear, no second mortgages, no liens, no encumbrances, it is bought and paid for.
TOPIC: Church
TITLE: UPON THIS ROCK
FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: Why is Jesus a successful church builder?I. Because He builds on a solid foundation!Jesus says, upon this rock, not just anyplace!II. Because He builds with certainty!Jesus says He will build, not can or might build!III. Because He builds as owner!Jesus says the church is My church!IV. And because He builds for permanence!Jesus says even the gates of Hades shall not overpower My church!
Matthew 10:27
TOPIC: Evangelism [Other topics: outreach]

Matthew 25:14-30

TITLE: THE UNPROFITABLE SERVANT - What He Lacked!
FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What did the Unprofitable Servant lack?I. He Lacked Comprehension (of God)!
II. He Lacked Devotion (to God)!
III. He Lacked Justification (from God)!
TOPIC: Lord's Supper [Atonement, Blessing, Crucifixion, Easter, Ordinance, Sacrifice, Substitution, Suffering]
TITLE: THE KEEPSAKE OF THE LORD - His Agony, Our Ecstasy!
TRUTH CLAIM: Memorial tokens are given to special people in our lives to cause then to have fond and enduring remembrances of us! They're intended to be kept for remembrance’s sake ... thus they are known as keep-sakes!
The Lord gave us His keepsake - an ordinance - we know it as the Lord's Supper! He paid for it with His life, yet it brings us great blessing!
FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How ought we visualize the Lord’s Supper in the light of His agony but Our ecstasy?I. WE SEE HIS AGONY IN ...APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: 1 Corinthians 11:26 says "as often as" we partake of His supper we "proclaim the Lord's death until He comes." This we may all do, freely!A. THE CUP OF...II. WE SEE OUR ECSTASY IN ...1. HIS BETRAYAL!B. THE BREAD OF HIS DEATH!
2. HIS NECESSITY!
3. HIS SHAME!
4. HIS PAIN!
5. HIS CONDEMNATION!A. THE CUP OF...1. OUR AWE!B. THE BREAD OF OUR NEW LIFE!
2. OUR REMEMBRANCE!
Yet only those who can declare in truth they’ve been "crucified with Christ" will have power in the proclamation of their testimony!
I perceive there are many who desire to proclaim Him "crucified," yet have no power, because they themselves have not been crucified with Him!
How the Lord must grieve as He sees us partake of His supper with such a deficiency in our lives.
If we freely choose to preach the Lord's agony (in this symbolic way), then we are obligated to practice what we preach!
It's not just those who are called to the preaching ministry who are obligated to preach that Christ died for our sins, but all those who go by the name of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:18-19)!
And, if we preach the Lord's agony, in this memorial way, professing to be followers of His, then we must manifest that same spirit of sacrifice which brought Him to the cross of His agony!
For it's in that spirit of sacrifice the world sees the truth and reality of what Jesus did for them!

B. All Our Professions!
C. All Our Personals!

B. All Our Emotions!
C. All Our Will!Jesus is not Lord of anything if He is not Lord of everything.

The declarative dimension of His will!III. The discretionary dimension of His will!Jeremiah 31:31 says that God declared His intentions, He did hide His intentions.
The Lord has said and the Bible has recorded that God will have mercy on whom He will have mercy ... and perfectly as well. We too should be merciful!

Jesus knew His disciples would abandon Him; He brought it up now that they might be forewarned and reach beyond it, yet He did not bring it up later to hold it against them.
