PROVERBS 31:29 - Good Moms Don't Scream!

TOPIC: Mother’s Day; Motherhood

TITLES: GOOD MOMS DON’T SCREAM – and other myths on motherhood!
TEXT: Proverbs 31:29ff
"Many daughters have done nobly,
But you excel them all.
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain,
But a woman who fears the LORD,
she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her in the gates."

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What does God want to see in His mothers?
CONCISE OUTLINE
I. HUMILITY BECOMES A GODLY MOTHER! [30a]
A. Charm is deceitful!
B. Beauty is vain!
II. FEAR OF THE LORD BECOMES A GODLY MOTHER! [30b]
A. Do not fear the threats of Satan! [Matthew 10:28]
B. Rather reverence God! [Proverbs 9:10]
III. GOOD FRUIT BECOMES A GODLY MOTHER! [31]
A. The fruit of her hands!
B. The fruit of her life!
[MYTHS] Many myths float around about mothers –
  • Moms never bake biscuits from little cardboard tubes that go “pow”!
  • Moms appear instantly whenever any family member yells “mom”!
  • Moms know exactly what each child wants to wear each day and have it waiting in the closet!
  • Moms are always at home when anyone calls!
  • Moms never raise their voices!
  • Moms look forward to teacher conferences!
  • Moms attend every sports event in tailored suit, nylons and heals!
  • Moms never say “no” to the PTA or the pastor!
  • Moms maintain a daily devotion with every child and never allow one to miss a flossing!
[Source: "A Good Mom Never Yells," Focus On The Family Magazine, (May 1988) 3]
[BOOTS] To prove the point, let me tell you of one little boy in Arkansas who was struggling with his rain boots … his teacher overheard his words of exasperation, "Mothers! They’re never around when you need them!"
[In Other Words (October 1991) 4]
TRUTH CLAIM/CONTEXT:
  1. The world (and its culture) has tried to tell us what makes a good Mom … "charm"!
  2. The flesh (nature) has also gotten into the act … "beauty"!
  3. And the devil (Satan)? Well, he has always tried to make moms oppose God … "rebellion"!
Many of you think, because you no longer have any children or never had any children, that it's too late for you to help anyone else become the mom God wants them to be! Wrong! Godly middle-aged and senior women can have an eternal impact on younger women!

My wife is a great mom, and I’m sure she would admit she has made most of the mistakes you should not make! Should she then not tell others what God says? Would that make her a hypocrite? No!

Most of what she knows to be the truth about mothering was seen in someone else or told to her by someone … mainly through God in her natural instincts, what we call common sense! Very little of what she believes to be true was discovered on her own!

Many young women are craving answers to the question, "WHAT MAKES FOR A GODLY MOM?"

If GODLY MOTHERS don't tell others how to be one, then the world, the flesh, and the devil surely will!

LETS LOOK AT SOME OF WHAT GOD WANTS!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What does God want to see in His mothers?
EXPANDED OUTLINE
I. GOD WANTS TO SEE HUMILITY! (As Becomes A Godly Mother)
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain.”
Proverbs 31:30a
A. Charm is deceitful!
Df. "charm" … "a trait that fascinates, allures or delights … a physical grace or attraction … compelling attractiveness." The word is used to describe a magical amulet used to control others!

Df. "deceitful" … "to trick … not honest … deceptive, misleading … ant trustworthy."
B. Beauty is vain!
Df. "beauty" … "the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit"

Df. "vain" … "having no real value … marked by futility … foolish or silly … undue or excessive pride in one's appearance of achievements"

[MORE] Did I tell you about this dream my wife had? About when she arrived in heaven and is standing in line to receive her rewards … she thinks to herself, “I’ve done a good job as a mom.” Then she notices Mother Teresa in front of her! “Well, at least I’m a real mother!” She thinks! But her bravado evaporates when she hears the Lord say, “I really expected a lot more out of you, Teresa!”
[“Grace,” In Other Words (May/June 1994) 8]
"Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments …”
1 Timothy 2:9
II. GOD WANTS TO SEE A FEAR OF THE LORD! (As Becomes A Godly Mother!)
“a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.”
Proverbs 31:30a
A. Do not fear the threats of Satan!
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Matthew 10:28
[DESTRUCTION] A missionary in Africa returned to his mission home to find a huge python on the front room floor … he hurried to his truck for his .45 caliber handgun, he then returned and shot it in the dead. The snake’s final death struggle wrecked the mission, almost destroying it.
[In Other Words (Nov/Dec, 1993) 5]
Satan is the serpent of old. Christ has wounded him in the head but his death struggle is wrecking havoc in our homes.
B. Rather reverence God!
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7
III. GOD WANTS TO SEE GOOD FRUIT! (Becomes A Godly Mother)
“Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.”
Proverbs 31:31

[QUOTE] “Satisfaction comes from having a lasting, positive impact on the lives of others. No one on earth … comes close to a mother for having …that kind of influence."
[Focus On The Family Magazine (May 1988) 4]
A. The fruit of her hands!
Her God given creative talents!
B. The fruit of her life!
Her God given procreative nature! (They will praise her in the city assemblies!)

"but rather by means of good works, as befits women making a claim to godliness."
1 Timothy 2:10
APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: Though not all women are called of God to be mothers, and though men are held to a mighty strict standard, those who are called as mothers are watched closely by God! And God does not im-pose arbitrary standards as a measure!
[SOUNDS] SHEEP go … “baaaa”! COWS go … “mooooo”! DOGS go …”bow wow”! MOMMIES go … “No! No! No!”
[In Other Words (May/June 1994) 8]
[FEES] John Maxwell reminds us we’re in debt from the moment we’re born; we owe our mothers nine months of carrying charges.
WELL, WE OWE GOD A LOT MORE, HE’S BEEN CARRYING US OUR ENTIRE LIVES … we also owe Him for our mothers!

1 Samuel 3:1-10 - How we ought to answer when He calls!

TEXT: 1 Samuel 3:1-10
Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD before Eli. And word from the LORD was rare in those days, visions were infrequent. It happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place ... and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was, that the LORD called Samuel; and he said, "Here I am."

Then he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, lie down again." ... Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, nor had the word of the LORD yet been revealed to him. (this happened twice more) ... .

Then Eli discerned that the LORD was calling the boy. And Eli said to Samuel, "Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Then the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for Your servant is listening.
TOPIC: Calling; hearing
TITLE: HERE I AM - How we ought to answer when He calls!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How ought we respond when the Lord calls?
CONCISE OUTLINE:
I. GOD CALLS THOSE WORTHY OF HIS TESTING!
II. GOD CALLS THOSE WORTHY OF HIS CHALLENGE!
III. GOD CALLS THOSE WORTHY OF GOD SIZED VISIONS!
IV. GOD CALLS THOSE WHO WILL BEAR HIS MESSAGES!
TRUTH/CONTEXT: Samuel’s mother had given up her son to the service of the Lord as a fulfillment of her promise to God; if He opened her womb that she might have a son she would dedicate the boy to Him.

To double her trouble she was one of two wives; of the two one was fertile and it wasn't Samuel’s mommy, Hannah. [1 Samuel 1 & 2:11]

Another aspect of the passage’s context is the priesthood of Eli and his miserable apostate and heretical sons … who Eli knew of and did nothing. God cursed Eli and his seed [1 Samuel 2:12-36] and said …

I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in My heart and in My soul; and I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed always.
[1 Samuel 2:35]
The real story of our passage is the genuine and innocent obedience of the boy to his surrogate father on earth, and his genuine and earnest desire to serve his Father in heaven.

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How ought we respond when the Lord calls?

EXPANDED OUTLINE:

I. GOD CALLS THOSE WORTHY OF HIS TESTING!
A. READER – Genesis 22:1-3 (we ask members to stand and read key Scripture for the message)
Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you." So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
B. Our Response should be “Here I am because God may test us

1. Even though it may be costly
2. Even though the world may laugh
II. GOD CALLS THOSE WORTHY OF HIS CHALLENGE!
A. READER - Genesis 46:2-4
God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, "Jacob, Jacob." And he said, "Here I am." He said, "I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. "I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will close your eyes."
B. Our response should be “Here I am because God may challenge us at a difficult moment
1. And God is faithful to restore
2. Consider Job and Romans 8:28
III. GOD CALLS THOSE WORTHY OF GOD SIZED VISIONS!
A. READER - Exodus 3:2-4

The angel of the LORD appeared to (Moses) in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed. So Moses said, "I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up." When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am."

B. Our response should be “Here I am” because we never know when we may be chosen
1. To change the course of time and eternity
2. Remember Esther –
Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, "Do not imagine that you in the king's palace can escape any more than all the Jews. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father's house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?"
[Esther 4:13-14]
IV. GOD CALLS THOSE WHO WILL BEAR HIS MESSAGES!
A. Isaiah 6:8-10
Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here I am. Send me!" He said, "Go, and tell this people: 'Keep on listening, but do not perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand.' "Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Otherwise they might see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, And return and be healed."
B. Acts 9:10-15
Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord." And the Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight. ... . Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine ... "
C. Hebrews 1:1-2
God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
D. Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Our response should be “Here I am” because, if we are indeed authentic blood bought believers, that shed blood of Jesus flowed down upon us and poured out on the ground upon which we stand ... "Behold, we are standing on holy ground."

APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: Long ago, in the Temple of the King on High, a voice was heard ringing down the halls of heaven, "Who will go that this stubborn people might hear? Who?"

And a voice was heard to answer back, "Here I am, Father! Send Me! I will be Your living sacrifice upon the Mount of the King!"

READER - Romans 10:11-15

For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!"
That any of us has not been called by God to be tested as Abraham, or challenged like Jacob, or trusted like Moses, should not be reason for rejoicing but for sorrow. It should say something to us that we’ve not been called. It should say that we're not considered worthy of God’s testing, challenge, or trust.

You ask, “What can I do?”

Let me suggest that you did not come this far, to this time, to this place alone … but in the presence and power of God.

The circumstances of this moment in your life are not greater than Him. He knows them better than you, and yet He permits them, and He will overcome them if you allow Him to. You are not to fret as though He does not know, does not care, and cannot overcome. Yours is to step out in faith, knowing only that He is there and here.

You are both His creation and His new creation. You are His to do with as it pleases Him - to bless or to consume, to serve or to endure. Today and every day belong to the Lord; it is the only day you have to serve and glorify Him. And so give Him all you have for today.

Lee Ann Womack sings a song called "I Hope You Dance," here are a couple of stanzas ...

Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance …
I hope you dance; I hope you dance

Give the heavens above, More than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance

[Finney] When Chas.Finney finished law school he reported to a law office as an apprentice. The senior lawyer quickly indoctrinated him in the office routine. Then the young lawyer sat at his desk and carried on this conversation with himself.

"What are you going to do when you finish your apprenticeship?"
"Hang out my shingle and practice law, of course!"
"What then?"
"Why, make a lot of money!"
"What then?"
"When I get rich I shall retire."
"What then?"
"Well, then I will die."
"What then?"

So let me ask you what you are making of the life the Lord has given you? What's next?

ISAIAH - Seed Archive

Isaiah 9:6-7
TOPIC: Christmas; Emmanuel, hope, promise

TITLE: GOD'S LITTLE WORD - A Child With Us!
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given ... .”
TRUTH CLAIM: God has revealed His plan for the ages! In a world gone nuts with hate (terrorists), evil (killing of the innocent unborn), deception (false religions), war (Israel), corruption (politics), and much, much more, it's good to know God has a plan!

God told us not to be downtrodden but rather to rejoice in everything ... for GOD IS WITH US! If God is for us, who then can be against us?

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How does this passage apply to me?
I. It Provides Me a Greater Joy!
II. It Provides Me a Greater Light!
III. It Provides Me a Greater Victory!
IV. It Provides Me a Greater King!
APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: Dear friends, if the first half of Isaiah's prophecy has been fulfilled ... that is, if it is true that God "sent His only begotten Son," that His Son was "born of a virgin," that His Son "suffered and died for our sins," and that "God raised Him from the dead on the third day" … then we ought to believe the second half as well!

That is, Christ is coming again ... to bring a greater joy, to bring a greater light for those who dwell in darkness, to bring final victory, and to bring a government greater in every way than David's! Oh what a day of rejoicing that will be!

Isaiah 49:6
"I will also make You as a light to the Nations, so that You, My Salvation, may reach the ends of the earth."
TOPIC: Missions [Calling; Evangelism, Missionaries]

TITLE: TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH!

TRUTH CLAIM: God has a plan, salvation to "all the nations" through His Son; theSon has a plan, salvation "all the nations" through you and me!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What is our role in foreign missions?
I. Our Role is Direct Involvement!
A. Through Submission!
B. Through Promotion!
II. Our Role is Indirect Involvement!
A. Intellectually!
B. Prayerfully!
C. Financially!
III. But Our Role is Never Uninvolvement!
APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: Our world view affects every thought we have and everyaction we take concerning missions. God is challenging all of us to remember: nomatter how many of us there are and no matter how great our problems seem to be,there are still billions more lost people than we have problems.

Isaiah 49:8-9
TOPIC: Covenant; faithfulness (of God), promises (of God)

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What then are some of His possessions which are now yours?
I. The Power of Christ is ours!
II. The Love of Christ is ours!
III. The Justice of Christ is ours!
IV. The Acceptance of Christ is ours!
V. The Righteousness of Christ is ours!
APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: Our blessed Jesus, as God, is omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent. Will it not console you to know that all these great and glorious attributes are altogether yours?

Our blessed Lord, as perfect man, is our substitute, our blood atonement. Does it not give you hope and peace to know that He did these things for you and that they are altogether yours?

Christ Himself is our peace and Christ is our the covenant, but you must be in Him to be a part of the agreement.

1. Mountains!
a. Heights
b. Meadows
2. Canyons!
a. Cliffs
b. Bottoms

EXODUS - Seed Archive

Exodus 3:10 [Matthew 28:19-20]
TOPIC: Calling; missions
TITLE: EVERY MAN A MOSES: Called To Bring God’s People Out!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How is the call to Moses similar to the Great Commission's call to the saint of today?
I. In that both call us to God!
II. In that both send us out from God!
III. In both we bring the enslaved to God!
APPLICATION/CHALLENGE: The world, like Israel, is in bondage. Each of us has been called to come to God, that He might send us out, that we might bring them out.

Every non-believer in the world today has his own Egypt, his own Pharaoh, and his own savior … what they lack is a Moses. For centuries priests stood between man and their God, now our apathy does!

18:18
TOPIC: Leadership; Organization, Planning

TITLE: REPRESENTATIVE AND REPRESENTED - How and why God wants us organized!
TEXT: EXODUS 18:18
“Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself."
TRUTH CLAIM: If left untaught and undiscussed, the people will let their leaders do all the work on their own.

Everywhere in Scripture we see the Lord encouraging and endorsing organization. Not to elevate one individual over another, but rather to show His people how to work together with one mind toward one goal, to show the leaders how they ought to organize the people for the work!

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: What three questions help us understand God's organizational plan?
CONCISE OUTLINE:
I. HOW HE WANTS US ORGANIZED?
II. WHY HE WANTS US ORGANIZED?
III. WHAT HE EXPECTS OF THE ORGANIZATION?
APPLICATION: Moses was so close to the trees, he couldn't see the forest; it took someone from outside to present better way to him. To Moses' credit he saw clearly the wisdom of his father-in-law's suggestion.

God has only one way to organize, yet he allows many variations of His way. It's not so important who has what method, rather it's whether we
  1. operate within the context of God's way
  2. work toward God's goal, and
  3. cooperate with one another to accomplish it
Our church has no exemption from God's plan; if we expect to be a part of achieving His objective, we must organize and cooperate His way!

CHALLENGE: We must challenge ourselves to remember it is not our work or our goal, but God's work and God's goal. If He prefers one way over another, we must organize His way and cooperate in His work!

Look around the church today and try to understand that we are following a biblical model. Try to learn how it operates, then find a way to get involved ... with a cooperative attitude.

19-20:1-2, 18-26
TOPIC: Priesthood; Types (OT)

TITLE: A SPECIAL TREASURE - A Kingdom of Priests and a Holy Nation!
TRUTH: The words of our title equally apply to the Church in 1 Peter 2:9. So the promises given to Israel are also given to the Church, "if [we] will indeed obey [His] voice and keep [His] covenant" [v.5].

It would do us well to make note of the similarities and differences between the Mosaic Covenant and the New Covenant in Christ's blood.

FOUNDATIONAL INQUIRY: How does Israel before God at Mt. Sinai compare to the Church before God today?
CONCISE OUTLINE
I. WE BOTH -
A. MUST COME BEFORE HIM!
B. MUST BE PREPARED TO COME!
C. CAN EXPECT TO HEAR HIS VOICE!
D. MUST OBEY HIS VOICE!
E. MUST KEEP HIS COVENANT!
II. BUT THE CHURCH -
A. NEEDS NO HUMAN INTERCESSOR!
B. HAS ONLY ONE LAW - THE ROYAL LAW!
C. MAY COME BOLDLY INTO HIS PRESENCE!
APPLICATION: O what joy floods my soul; O what freedom I enjoy! The Lord, while I was yet a sinner, died for me! I'm not just free, but free indeed!

In other words, it's impossible to keep the law: "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all." [James 2:10]

In fact, it was never God's intent that the law be kept: "The law was our tuto, to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith." [Galatians 3:24]

It was always God's plan to redeem the world through His Son: "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, 'Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" [John 1:29]

CHALLENGE: There are five or six covenants in the Old Testament. The believer, who truly appreciates what the Lord has done, will endeavor to understand the purpose of these covenants relative to the New Covenant in Christ's blood. The reason?

Most of what we know as New Testament light has reflected off those covenants. You'll be surprised when your eyes are opened to this truth.
